Learn the basics of basket making. This is a self-paced class appropriate for all skill levels. Students will learn terminology and a bit of history that is exclusive to basket making. Learn to read a pattern, apply and develop new skills and enjoy fellowship in this fun class. Denise will share lots of weaving tips and her original basket designs with students. Come and catch the basket weaving bug! It is quite addictive.

 

 

PHOTOGRAPHY

In this course we'll explore basic photographic principles through classroom instruction and shooting in the field. Topics will include using your camera's settings to produce creative effects in your images, how lighting is key to creating quality images, and developing your photographer's eye to produce images that stand out above the rest.

 

 

DRAWING / WATER COLOR PAINTING

Fulfill and explore your personal style of expression as you enjoy the Smoky Mountains at Fontana. Learn the basics or improve your existing skills in a supportive, hands on environment with a knowledgeable instructor. Shading, line, proportion, perspective, in pencil, ink, and watercolor.  Focus is on landscape and animals of the Appalachians.


 

THE ILLUSTRATED TRAVEL JOURNAL IN INK & WATERCOLOR

 

For the traveler, landscape painter, gardener -- anyone who wants to record what they see and experience in a personal watercolor journal. You’ll learn 6 skills: simplify your subjects, render them quickly in pencil, enhance your drawings with ink, add color with watercolor washes, design your sketchbook pages, and incorporate words into each page’s design. We will work from real life and your photographs. Activities will include demonstrations, in-class exercises and outdoor excursion, circumstances permitting. Some drawing experience helpful; all levels welcome


MAKE AND PLAY A DULCIMER

Instructor: John Huron

 

Participants will learn wood joinery and finishing, fretting (metal not mental) and dulcimer set-up techniques. Some of the pieces are prefabricated to eliminate the use of dangerous power tools and time spent “watching the glue dry”. However there is still plenty of work left to be done and all pre assembly operations will be discussed in detail.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Fly Tying and Fishing

By attending this class, participants will take with them a better understanding of the macro-invertebrates that trout thrive on and how to construct effective fly imitations of these insects. In addition, this course provides valuable river time.  Cost is $285, plus instructor materials.

 

Beginner Bluegrass Banjo

This private instruction class is for total beginners and is taught by Karl Sutter an experienced teacher at Stecoah Valley Center.   Cost is $189.
